View Website: Sam Contis (b. 1982) uses photography and archival research to explore the relationship of bodies and landscape and the shifting nature of gender identity and expression. The body of work in this exhibition was made at Deep Springs College, one of the country’s last all-male institutions of higher learning, located in a remote valley on the California–Nevada border. The Bay Area–based artist’s images call to mind a long history of photography in the intermountain West, from Timothy O’Sullivan and Carleton Watkins to Ansel Adams and Richard Misrach. Ends August 27.

View Website: Celebrate Bay Area’s multi-cultural tapestry in song, dance and craft here in Berkeley! Talented musicians have prepared a wonderful party. Each day local folks running colorful community and artisan booths, plus children’s activities add a colorful backdrop to the headlining concerts. Saturday, June 10th at MLK Jr. Civic Center Park near Bart. Enjoy concert headliners and meadow performances. The Berkeley Farmers Market (’til 3 pm) adds to the festivities. . Sunday, June 11th, best starting place is Telegraph Avenue at Haste St, near UC Berkeley. A wonderful mix of performances indoors & along the sidewalk (Noon – 9 pm) as well as the the concert in People’s Park (Noon – 6 pm) await you. Schedules will be available at event information both.

View Website: June is definitely Book Lovers Month in Berkeley! The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library ANNUAL BOOK SALE comes on the heels of the Bay Area Book Fest.  The Annual Sale is Saturday, June 10, 10-4 p.m. and Sunday, June 11, 1-4 p.m., in the third floor meeting room at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street. Hundreds of cartons of donated books, CDs, DVDs, Books on Tape, and sheet music have been sorted for the sale and will be arranged by topic for the extremely  low price of 50 cents each. This year’s Better Books section, with prices only slightly higher, includes recently received books on History, Art and Photography as well as Modern Library editions and others topics of special interest to Berkeley readers.  You will also find tables full of fiction and non-fiction, mysteries, and sci-fi, as well as those  books “you always meant to read.” Cookbooks, travel guides, maps and so much more are also in the mix.   The Friends Sale is also a good time to stock up on excellent children’s books that are arranged by school grade to help you select the perfect item.
