Music and Games and Beer, Oh My! Cornerstone Opens in Berkeley

A new venue has joined the ever expanding roster of choices for libations, food and entertainment in downtown Berkeley. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Cornerstone, at 2367 Shattuck Avenue (near Durant) offers up craft beers, pub food, indoor/outdoor seating, TV screens, games and live music.

The space was formerly home to Thalassa, the pool hall and bar that closed its doors in 2014. Cornerstone is the brainchild of Alex Popov and his wife Stephanie Dodson and brothers Chris and Greg Hoff. The intention was to combine all their favorite bits into one unique space and put their unique signature on it. Sort of two spaces in one, the design of the venue was created by Berkeley architectural group, Studio KDA, with separate entrances for the restaurant and music hall, including a separate entrance for performers. One can feel that the function and flow was well planned out to accommodate these distinct aspects of the business.

The beer menu features 42 carefully sourced craft beers, ciders and meads across a 5o-foot bar. With a state-of-the art JBL sound and lighting system, live music here will surely be a treat. The interior space is 13,000 square feet with an adjoining outdoor patio that has its own taps, community tables and fire pits for those cooler Northern California nights. And it that isn’t enough, the space, when not being used for live music, converts into a game room with ping pong, corn hole and giant janga.

As the live music side of the business is shaping up, the entrepreneurs are booking acts that range from punk, indie rock and hip hop to smaller acts that will have the option to perform in the café area of the place. Currently on the roster for spring and summer are Collie Buddz, Poliça, Reckless Kelly and Agent Orange, to name a few. There are also plans to open the space for benefits and special events including providing a venue for the popular annual Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley.

The menu is typical pub fare, described as “rustic comfort food that goes well with beer.” Sounds about perfect, so belly on up and check out Berkeley’s newest great hang-out spot for convivial indulgence of the senses.
