A Taste of Korea: The Berkeley Social Club

The Berkeley Social Club has opened on University Avenue in the space formerly occupied by Meridian. Located at 2050 University Avenue (between Milvia and Shattuck), the BSC is just one of the latest additions to the ever evolving downtown dining scene. If you’re a carnivore who likes Asian cuisine or hanging out with a variety of options, this might be your new spot.

According to their website, the menu is “Inspired, contemporary Korean American cuisine located in the heart of Berkeley’s University Avenue. Serving innovative Asian dinners and a creative American breakfast and brunch menu with a touch of Asian influence. We combine top notch chefs, top-quality, locally-sourced organic ingredients and a relaxed, spacious atmosphere to create a haven for people who love great food and drinks.”

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu is an eclectic and spicy mix of Korean and Asian style dishes along with some familiar American favorites. Go there for breakfast and you might have a straightforward egg scramble or opt for a Korean Pajun pancake. For lunch, a burger might be your usual choice or you could go Asian with a Club Moco: rice stacked with sautéed kimchi, savory beef patty, egg and gravy.

And for dinner, well, that’s where there is a clear departure from the familiar. Put your adventurous bib on and startle your taste buds with such exotica as “Jjam Bbong”, a spicy seafood noodle soup with shrimp, scallop, calamari, mussel and vegetables; Dolsot, a hot veggie stonepot, or belly up for the Belly Pot, some Korean tacos, an array of crazy appetizers, a fried rice or Udon plate, to name a few.

With up to 40 local and nationally-acclaimed craft beers on tap, you’re sure to find something satisfying to wash it all down or simply wet your whistle. The big interior space invites intimacy or cameraderie, depending on your mood, with seating for singles or couples as well as big communal tables. There are large screens, open WiFi and a heated outdoor patio with a cozy fireplace, too.
